Medications
The first medications for the treatment of schizophrenia became widely available in the 1950s. These were the first generation antipsychotic medications (also known as neuroleptics and major tranquilizers). These medications revolutionized the treatment of schizophrenia and launched the beginning of a wave of deinstitutionalization that continues today.

While they are not technically medications, nutritional supplements are sometimes used to treat schizophrenia. Some clinicians endorse this practice, while others discourage it. There are also some doctors who remain neutral and concern themselves only if the cost of these supplements constitutes an undue financial hardship for their patients or involve doses of vitamins or minerals that could be harmful.
